Des Pardes : The Challenge of the Glocal Call out

International Exchange shows proposing to bring together the works of about one hundred artists, half from the East Midlands in the UK and half from Vadodara in India, that offer a perspective and an interesting take on the theme Des Pardes: The Challenge of the Glocal.

Des Pardes is a compound Hindi word of opposites meaning ‘motherland-foreign land’. The word encompasses within itself the idea of conflict that the opposition suggests. Glocal is a popular amalgamation of the words ‘global’ and ‘local’, having almost the same meaning as Des Pardes, but because it has internalized the conflict into a single word, its connotations are much more positive. The artworks must reflect the essence of the theme of Globalisation in the way that the artist has understood it and its effects.

The show will open in Britain this summer and then travel to India.

Call for Artists

Artcore, is delighted to invite Artists to participate in two forthcoming exhibitions, called Des Pardes:  The Challenge of the Glocal. Each Artist will submit two artworks responding directly to this theme. Artists in UK Please send your acceptance of participation on email to Zahir Shaikh  on info@artcore-studio.co.uk by April 30, 2010 to help us plan better.

1. Des Pardes: The Challenge of the Glocal to open in Derbyshire on June 25, 2010, at DEDA UK. All artists are expected to create paintings on canvas, drawings on paper and prints (framed) without size limitations. This show would be exhibited with approximately 50 Indian Artists works. Artists from the East Midlands UK are required to send their finished and framed works to Artcore on or before June 20, 2010.

2. Des Pardes: The Local show to open in July in an Empty shop in Derby city centre and to travel to India to be a part of Des Pardes: The Challenge of the Glocal India in October 2010. All artists are expected to create paintings on canvas, drawings on paper and prints that are of 60 x 60 cms in size including the framing. Artists from the East Midlands UK are required to send their finished and framed works to Artcore on or before June 30, 2010.

All participating artists must also send/email JPEG 300 dpi images of both their works along with a small note on that work (100 words or less) and a brief bio-data of themselves, for publication in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition. They must also clearly indicate their price (artist’s price) for sale of the work in UK and in India. There will be a £10 fee to participate in the show.

Artcore will examine the finished work and selection of the work for the exhibition will be at the sole discretion of Artcore. The chief consideration here will be the work’s ability to speak on the Glocal theme of the show.  The selectors decision is final and no dialogue will be entered into regarding unselected work.

Works sold at the exhibition in UK will be sent to the buyers and will not travel to the Indian leg of the show. Unsold work by UK artists will be returned to them after the show returns to UK from India in November 2010.

Des Pardes: The Challenge of the Glocal

The last decade of the 20th century ushered in a world-wide phenomenon called Globalisation. It completely changed the way the world’s economy functioned. With the weakening of the socialist and communist ideologies in European and Asian giants like the former USSR and China, capitalist economy as a model to follow gained currency. A number of countries such as India opened their doors and foreign goods began flooding these vast markets. Industrial, business, academic and cultural collaborations between countries received encouragement; people traveled more and engaged with people from different socio-cultural backgrounds and traditions.

So much for the positive fall-outs of Globalisation. There were many negatives too.

A number of economists feel that the faulty predictions of financial boom-time engendered by the tenets of globalization and the ideas it promoted, led to the reckless  financial behaviour on the part of many corporates that in turn led to one of the most serious recessionary trends in world economy.  This recession seriously affected the lives of millions of people and thousands of families across the globe. It especially dealt a severe body blow to the so-called developed, ‘first world’ countries in the west, shaking the foundations of the social security/welfare economy that these societies thrived upon.

Neither India nor Great Britain has been left untouched by the effects of Globalization. But the interesting fact is that they have both been touched in very different ways indeed.

  Friendship

Artcore in collaboration with Arts for All are working on a 'Friendship' event at REVIVE on 13th November 2009. We will be exploring a very interesting technique of sand casting and creating mural pieces. Some of these murals will be selected to be put up as a permanent exhibit at Revive.

The Participants will be working on the theme 'Friendship' which is important in everyone's life. This interesting technique involves sand and creating impressions in sand. It is a lot of fun and play of negative and positive impressions and yields ornaments with a rustic surface that seems weathered.

This is a free event and all are welcome to participate.
